Pre-Submission Critique and Copyedit of 10,000 Words

At this stage, you're probably looking to submit your story to publishers or agents. You feel happy with your story as a whole, although you're just not quite sure your story is up to the test of the brutal and often demoralising submissions and querying process.

A pre-submission critique and copyedit of 10,000 words will not only provide you with everything included in the copyediting service, it will also give you the added benefit of critique comments in your document. This will provide you with feedback on the larger picture elements of your story, and how they come across in the beginning of the book.

By opting for this service, you may also pick up useful tools that help you in your self-editing process. By seeing my changes and suggestions, you will know what to look out for when continuing on with editing the rest of the story.

What this service includes:

  • Copyediting of the first 10,000 words of your story (see my copyediting service for more details)

  • Extensive comments and edits regarding:

    • Point of view (POV) - is point of view consistent? Is there head-hopping at play? Is narrative distance being effectively utilised, switched up and is it appropriate for the point of view chosen?

    • Pacing - Is the first chapter suitably engaging? Are there any initial areas which feel underdeveloped and rushed over, or any scenes which feel superfluous and drag?

    • Character - do characters feel authentic? Is there enough of a distinction between them? Are they necessary to the opening of the story? Do they feel suitably engaging?

    • Dialogue - is dialogue authentic? Is it necessary? Does it drag?

    • Plot - are there any warning signs or potential red flags and inconsistencies with the initial introduction to the plot?

    • Setting - is the world building detailed enough? Do the plot and characters act in a way that makes sense based on their surroundings? Has the setting influenced the events of the story?

    • Structure - do opening scenes unfold in a way that makes sense? Is the timeline confusing?
